How coaching works

No intake packet, no assessment battery, no six-week curriculum. Here's the actual shape of it.

The first conversation

About 30 minutes. Free, like everything else here, and it doesn't obligate you to anything.

You tell me what's going on

In your own words, in whatever order it comes out. You don't need to have it organized before we talk — organizing it is part of what the conversation is for.

I ask questions

Mostly about what you've already tried, what's actually in your control, and what you're afraid happens if you move. This is where most of the useful stuff surfaces.

We name one next step

Small and specific enough that you can picture doing it this week. Not a plan for the year.

You decide about a next session

If it was worth your time, we schedule. If it wasn't, you don't have to let me down gently — just say so.

After that

Ongoing sessions are looser than the first one, because we're picking up a thread instead of starting from zero.

Length

45 to 60 minutes

By phone or video, whichever you prefer. If a shorter check-in is all you need that week, we do a shorter check-in.

Rhythm

Whatever fits your life

Weekly while you're working through something, monthly when you're steady, or ad hoc when a decision lands on you. You can change it any time.

Between sessions

Only what you agreed to

No worksheets, no homework I assign. Whatever you said you'd do is what we pick up at the start of the next call.

Common questions

Mark Hope

What does it cost?

Nothing, and there's no version of this that costs something later. It's funded as charitable work through We Help People Everywhere, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Why would someone do this for free?

Because the nonprofit exists to help people get things started, and a conversation is often the cheapest useful thing anyone can give you. That's the whole reasoning.

Is coaching the same as therapy?

No. Coaching is a forward-looking conversation about decisions and follow-through. It isn't therapy, counseling, diagnosis, or treatment, and it isn't legal, medical, or financial advice. If what you're dealing with belongs with a licensed professional, I'll tell you so early.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes, with the ordinary exceptions where someone's safety is at stake. It's worth knowing that coaching doesn't carry the same legal privilege that licensed clinical care does.

Do I have to commit to a number of sessions?

No. There's no minimum, no package, and nothing to cancel. Schedule when you want to, stop when you're done.

What if we're not a good fit?

Then we're not, and that's genuinely fine. I'd rather say it out loud in the first conversation than have you sit through five more out of politeness.

If you're in crisis right now, please contact emergency services or a crisis line rather than waiting on an email reply. In the US you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, any time.

Start with one message

A few sentences about what you're working on is enough to get a first conversation on the calendar.
